A2 FSI mystery part: what's this?

A fellow A2 owner is wondering what this part is:

 

The part looks a bit dirty inside (filter?) and he is wondering what he should do. Any idea what part this is?

It looks like a fuel filter (in german: Benzinfilter)

Hi,

 

to me it looks like a filter too, but according to the VW/AUDI parts catalogue it's a damper / absorber.

It's part of the carbonfilter sytem, which saves the gas vapours of the fuel tank and releases them into the intake when the engine is started.

 

Mine looks as dirty as the one on the pictures. I think it's supposed to look like that. No need to change.
