Hello, so a couple of important questions have come up today and I'll work through them as they come up. The first ones involve food. 1. Kar De Mumma has sent me a lunch option which I need to take up or decline. The table will be reserved for 15-20 people (which is I think the correct number at that point). I think it's actually 17, but don't want to be too specific. I need to tell them ahead of time and I'm assuming there's a minimum number involved, so that's why I'm asking. The options for lunch are: - Soup lunch @ 9,50 - Buffet Lunch @ 10,50 - "Daily Special" @ €13,50 - Group Menu @ 25,50 Examples of each option are: Soup lunch: Roast beef salad / artichoke soup; Goat cheese salad / mushroom soup Buffet lunch: meatballs with cream sauce; chicken balls with curry sauce; "Daily Special": salmon medallions with prawn remoulade sauce; pulled pork, country potatoes and aioli. The group menu looks like this: - Green salad, fresh and marinated vegetables, olives, croutons, root vegetable chips - pesto-marinated cheese, house dressing - own bakery breads and butter (incl. glutenfree) - tender roast beef with creamy pepper sauce - mildly smoked salmon with dill-tzatziki - warm potato salad - coffee, tea and chocolate brownies If you're even remotely interested in the group menu, I need to know this week still. I know, it seems expensive, but if you've tried going out in Helsinki recently, you'll understand that the idea of getting a good meal with a (single) drink and walking out having spent much less than €50 per head is hard to do unless it's a lunch offer. 2. That's the second part of this: I've done the maths and reiterated my understanding of pricing for food in this part of the planet. I've been through a plan which involves around 24 people Friday, 30 Saturday and Sunday, 22 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. That translates to > 200 rolls for breakfasts alone... (30+30+22+18 = 90 x 2.5 = 225). Friday will probably involve some pizzas, lasagne and some basic finnish staples. Saturday will include some chili, salmon (Waltteri is back with us, so he'll be dealing with that one), some vaguely asian chicken and rice. Sunday will involve pasta, more fish, some pork and a couple of sauces. I've priced this up, approximately, using the quantities I'm reasonably sure of, and have hit >€500 at Lidl prices. That doesn't include any desserts or snacks. It does include some sausage for the grill at the track and coffee and similar. I did check that my maths was approximately correct when we wandered through one on Sunday, and it's close enough. Breakfasts will involve "Aufschnitt", so the usual selection of cold cuts and cheeses and jam on part-baked rolls. **ACTION NEEDED** I'm looking for two things from you: 1. Feedback if you're interested in Kar de Mumma's Group menu or not 2. €30 for the food for the weekend. If you do not want to eat with the group, that's fine. Please tell me that. Includes at least: Dinner Friday, Saturday, Sunday; Breakfast Saturday, Sunday, Monday, probably Tuesday. Coffee / Tea at Track Saturday, Sunday. If you're eating with us, please transfer the funds - €30 - to the account you used earlier. Track update Ice is currently 20cm thick (as of 5th Jan). This is OK, but it needs to be thicker for it to carry the tractor properly which will prepare the track itself. Current weather forecasts have another week or so of cold weather, which is great for adding thickness, because after a serious snowfall, the rate of ice growth will drop significantly. I have another call with Trackmeister scheduled for next week to get a better understanding of the situation. Plan B involves closed roads and testing facilities that Skoda uses. We may yet still need to switch to this, but the forecast looks good right now. Update next week and not before. Trainer: No update, I haven't managed to get hold of him. Houses: Update pending, I have an email out for answers. - Bret

- Bret

In 4 Wochen geht's los... While we're on the subject: Petrol: 95 / €1.299 98 / €1.345 Diesel / €1.115 Source: Polttoaine.net - Powered by Webmoon Extra finance info: you can bank on Kar de Mumma being around €10 - €13, just like the cheapest thing on the menu at ABC is €10 without it being a burger. Lunch at the track is €12 for the buffet. I'm avoiding the menu offer Kar de Mumma have made, even though it looks really good, because it's €25 or so. Experience from last time: Nilsiä's supermarket prices are almost as bad as Tahko. I had a couple of receipts in front of me recently from last winter, with beers, some snacks and a couple of other bits. Steffen went out twice in total and it summed to nearly €80. This is why I want you to bring some drinks with and why I'm shopping in southern Finland. Catering services were looked at for the weekend, but the prices were so high it got thrown out pretty quickly. When the ferry returns to Germany, they should take on board a bunch of fresh dark rye bread, which is truly awesome when it's fresh. The ferry is pretty good for drinks, with beers being less than €5; if you go out in Helsinki you can expect to pay €7-8 depending on where you are. - Bret

Hello, To answer a couple of comments: Trainer? Last time, this was a requirement. Now whether it is so this time or not I do not know, but the safety requirement of Trackmeister's organisation is huge and continuous. It's really almost strange in a country where I can buy an axe in a supermarket, but they are paranoid and cannot afford bad publicity. As to cost, I know what the trainer cost was last year and have added a small amount on, with the request to keep it to Saturday morning, so it's a) cheaper and b) doesn't conflict with his own business. The most effective way to learn is immediate feedback, we know that, and though some is given directly by the car, an outside opinion can be of use. If given the option of a cheap trainer, I will take it, if not, no. It was requested; one third of attendees is new, one third has done this before at some point and one third were here last year. So I figured that it was a nice "I'll cover this", make sure you take away some safety stuff, reintroduce the oldtimers, introduce the newbies and otherwise set things up. I also have a massive problem in not being able to be in two places at once. I cannot make sure you guys leave on time while also having been at the lake thirty minutes ahead. I don't know where we're driving to the track and it might change anyway, which is why I need to meet Trackmeister on Friday. That's also when I understand where the cones are if I need them etc. Regarding costs I'm going to make this really clear: I am not doing this for a big fat zero. I am aiming to clear a small profit - call it €1-200 - and definitely no minuses. I am not asking people to help for nothing. I am not going for free "training". I do bear the full responsibility for around €5.5k project budget. If something goes wrong in a house and things break, then it's under my name. I also get to bear the issue if something doesn't work out. Do the houses pay for themselves? They didn't last year, they do this year. So, do I set pricing to be "cheap" or to be a little higher than it *has* to be so that if someone does drop out - and it's quite possible one car does - I'm not in the financial doo-doo? I spent days working this one out. It's a massive guess. €10 per head is €300 in total; it's a minimal amount per head but quite a lot together. As of right now, feel free to do the math when you're clear who is paying what and who isn't. After last year's unpleasant surprise, I'm figuring track to be around €2k. Around, because unlike in Hyvinkää, the snow work isn't included in the base price. Cottages are another €2k. Then there's the helper costs, at around €200 - including food, because I'm not asking someone to stand around in the freezing cold and then ask them to pay for it - and other incidentals like visiting Trackmeister to talk things through. A trainer will not be less than last year, of that I'm sure, but it's also a bigger group. So call it around €750. That's over €5k gone. Not all possible attendees have yet paid, not all have decided. I get to carry that risk. At least one is a freebie. I'm fine with that, especially with this level of attendance. Until André confirmed I was damned close to running a loss. Without the remaining non-payer and the undecided, I'm at approximately zero, but will they pay or turn up? I've no idea. Others may want to join - two from last year do - but can't commit because they travel so much. From this, then, I'm supposed to find around €6-700 to feed 30 people for the weekend. That doesn't work. Maybe I'm overestimating the food budget for the weekend (though considering even Lidl's prices here, I doubt that very much). There's still gear to be found and I'm reasonably sure I've overestimated the track cost mildly, but I am not interested in a bill in March that's even larger than what I've set aside. BTW: €60 for our own food bill for the weekend + x is about right. If you don't want to participate, that's fine. But then please stay out of the way while we're cooking. If you don't want to drive convoy, fine, but remember you're missing out on half the fun at that point. A final note: one of the reasons a suggestion for JT was killed was because the location wanted the (a2) club to take responsibility for the accommodation and the club didn't feel able to do that. I understand that concept completely and there's no way I would want to do this voluntarily for a larger group. - Bret
