I actually have two of them now, but haven't installed either of them yet. I did take the sensor apart, though.

It's built a little differently, and I have some doubts that it measures exactly the same thing as the original.

Do they stop the error in the dashboard? in fact that is the most annoying part. If the error in the dashboard disappears it's worth it.

It looks like the thinner version does not have minimum level detection. The original has a small strip at the end that looks like it would trigger when the minimum is met.

You have to be careful to read the oil level like any other normal person with the stick:)) but again if the annoying error disappears from the dashboard than is worth it.

To reach this goal, you just need to install any kind of VAG 3Pin Oil-Level sensor somewhere in dry in the engine compartment.

But you need to install it in such a way so it would not trigger "low oil level" alert. Unfortunately is not that easy in this case but you could somehow get a normal oil sensor and make a contact on the level circuit so it does not trigger the error.

This could work indeed for some people.

Und das gibt dann keinen Fehler, wenn der Sensor nicht im Öl hängt? Was zeigt VCDS dann für einen Ölstand an?

No, I don't know why, but a dry sensor mounted to the harness calms any error messages.

Why shouldn't it be as easy as that? All you need is a cheap oil level sensor and some cable ties

Nein!

Keine Ahnung, aber das ist ja auch nicht wichtig, wenn man die Fehlermehldung so umgehen möchte..

Gents,

just a friendly reminder that this is the English language part of your beloved A2 friends board. So it would be highly appreciated if you would try to stick to that language instead of posting in German. :TOP:

Oder auf "gut Deutsch": Hier nix schreiben auf Deutsch! :D

Thanks a lot!

IT WILL...

There will be a new error: LOW OIL LEVEL for sure. I tested and that is what is shows. If there is no oil to actually set the level.

It is a oil level sensor...if there is no oil there is no medium to make contact on the film that is in the pictures -- hence: LOW LEVEL warning appears instead of sensor error.

After a Motor conversion (to AUB) I drove severly years with an original Audi oil level sensor placed above suspension in a dry plastic bag. No warning, no problems. Sometimes the sensor "felt down" and a warning comes up, so I have to replace the sensor again in a "good" position.

There are people driving around with dry sensors and no warning, it probably depends on the sensor you tried?

That might be -- the audi oem version.

It is even annoying sometimes that it raises the low oil level warning but when i check the dip stick it is ok. It is related to that switch in the bonnet that resets the oil level only.

That function is really weird, because i doesnt reset right away when you open the bonnet, it just kills the warning for some time and you have to drive 15 or 50 km or somethimngs to see the new oil level in the system if i remeber that right.

Ich hatte mit einem Verkäufer auf kleinanzeigen Kontakt, bei ihm scheint es zu funktionieren.

I was in contact with a seller on classifieds; it seems to work for him.

i think the sensor senses by heating up with a certain current and measuring the resistance + cooling down time, so you can fill any  VAG Sensor with any kind of potting, i once used a dummy filled with silicon glue until i repaired the original one.

so the sensor always senses "full"-no low oil level alert any more.

Funny enough, you don't need to fill the dummy's at all. They think it is full with anything, in this case it's air.

That function is there for a reason. Since it takes several hours to adjust to the now proper oil level, the lamp still indicates too little oil. People would simply overfill.

Try  to disconnect the service flap sensor, wait until the oil warning comes on, refill, and you will see that the oil warning will remain for quite some time.

Who is right here?

@Mankmil also says, no error at all with a dummy sensor.
